Dark rooms in dreams almost always represent the unknown — things one has not yet encountered, has repressed, or hesitates to explore in waking life. The darkness itself is rarely threatening; it is more of an invitation.

Dark rooms often appear inside houses or basements, underlining the connection to the unconscious. If in a dream you are afraid to enter a dark room, this can be a clue about which area of your life you are currently avoiding.

In a lucid dream you can actively enter the dark room and turn on the light — literally: bringing consciousness into the unconscious. Experienced lucid dreamers describe this technique as profoundly insightful.
